Charles Huggins Obituary

The funeral service for Mr. Charles Lee Huggins will be Monday, October 8, 2018 11:00am at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Bucksport, South Carolina.  Visitation will be Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at McKiever Funeral Home in Conway.

Mr. Charles Lee Huggins was the son of the late Vander and Lillie Hughes of Bucksport, South Carolina.  He departed this life on October 3, 2018.  Charles had a selfless humble spirit.  He was always well dressed and although he was quiet, his spoken words were not only meaningful but extremely heartfelt.  We can never forget his love for his crossword puzzles and baseball - especially the New York Yankees.

Charles graduated from Whittemore High School at the young age of 16 in 1952.  After graduating, he served in the United States Army as a Specialist Third Class.  After serving in the Army, he migrated to Newark, New Jersey in 1957 where he worked as a postal truck driver for the United States Postal Service for 32 years and 6 days.  Over the years, Charles was active in several organizations including the American Legion Post 152 in Newark, New Jersey.  After retiring, Charles moved back home to Bucksport, South Carolina and he was determined to bring veterans together to honor them by having Veterans Day celebration in 2014.  Also, he was a founding member of the Distinguished Men of Bucksport where he served as the Vice President.

Serving others was not Charles's only love.  In April of 2003, he married the love of his life, Lavoncia Ruth Ellington.  Their bond will never be broken.  Along with his wife Lavoncia Ruth and sisters Leatha Carson and Betty (Lillie Mae) Simmons, his adopted brother Henry B. Sherman who preceded him in death, he leaves his children, sons James Connie Chadmon of Bucksport, Charles Huggins, Jr. (Sheryl), Selina Pringle (Willie), Maxine Huggins, Idella Huggins, Lisa Huggins, and daughter Natasha Huggins (deceased) all of Newark, New Jersey.  He leaves a host of loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to cherish his memory.
