Bishop Walker Johnson, Sr Obituary

On Friday, February 25, 2022, God called for his faithful servant, Bishop Walker Lee Johnson, Sr., to take his journey to eternal rest.

Bishop Walker Lee Johnson, Sr, the son of the late Lila White Johnson and Luther Johnson, was born February 19, 1942 in Andrews, South Carolina.

He attended Rosemary High School in Andrews, SC. He later ventured to New York and stayed a while upon returning back to Conway, SC.  He was employed by Grand Strand Water and Sewer until he retired.

At sometime in the 1980's Bishop Johnson, as we would call him, accepted the Lord, got saved and joined the St. John Church of God General Assembly Church of God, Inc. After surrendering to the Lord, he was determined to make his calling and election sure. Before his confession of salvation he would do whatever he could do to assist in maintenance, keeping the grounds and many other things his hands could do to assist. His beloved wife Elder Nina Sherman Johnson served as Assistant Pastor to Pastor Laura B. Spain.

Bishop Johnson faithfully moved up the ranks of the church as: Brother, Trustee, Deacon, Minister, Ordained Elder, 2nd Vice Bishop, State Overseer for South Carolina GACOG until they went independent.

Bishop Johnson was a very caring individual who sought to help and encourage all those who knew and needed him.  He had the heart of a servant, one who would go above and beyond the call of duty.

He was married to the late Nina Lee Sherman Johnson (Co-Pastor). They were blessed with five children.

In the year of 2002, Bishop Johnson became the Founder and Pastor of the St. James Church of God in Bucksville, SC. The old building had been remodeled 3 times. The Lord gave Bishop Johnson a vision for a new building, for the old building kept deteriorating. Bishop Johnson said the Lord had given him the vision and he knew God would see him bring it to pass. In January 2003 contracts were signed for the beginning of the new church. God just kept on blessing and the work continued on everyday in the name of Jesus. From faith to faith in February 2004, the new church was completed.

Bishop Johnson was faithful and obedient to the Lord and moved according to the spirit of God. He loved St. James and the St. James Church family. He was dedicated to his calling. Bishop Johnson put his time in. In 2021, Bishop knew his health was not like it use to be so he appointed Minister Donald Gause to be the Pastor of St. James as he continued as the Bishop and Overseer.  His beautiful life will be forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.

He leave to cherish his memories: two daughters: Jennifer Johnson and Ms. Tracey Richardson of Conway, SC; three sons: Walker (Jack) Johnson, Jr, of Conway, SC, Jason Johnson of Loris, SC and Fred Johnson of California; one sister, Ruby Mae Johnson, one brother, Arthur Lee (Pappy) Johnson both of Conway, SC; two sisters-in-law: Ms. Lizzie Mae Sherman and Mrs. Rebecca Sherman both of Bucksport, SC; one brother-in-law, Mr. Roosevelt Sherman of Bucksport, SC; three grand children: Tracia, Kerwin and Sterlin and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
