Obituary of the Late Mrs. Crett Ann Booth Bellamy

The day God brought Crett Ann Booth Bellamy into this world, no one could have imagined the long life she would enjoy, the natural talents she would refine, or the difference she'd make for many through her missionary and political work. Born on July 14, 1924 to Ben Booth, Sr. and Mary Anderson Booth, Ms. Crett enjoyed a happy childhood with her parents and seven siblings. She was educated in Horry County public schools, but was largely self-taught. Curiosity led her to be an avid reader and a traveler. In the days when few women had driver's licenses, it was commonplace for her to drive her own car up and down the east coast, accompanied or not, and long before, mobile phones or GPS devices were invented. 'Ms. Crett', Aunt Crett to some, Mama Crett to others was a clever woman-independent, industrious, enterprising, and calm, knowing who she was and whose she was. She consistently leaned on the Lord.

Mama Crett read the newspaper every day and was a gifted seamstress and saleswoman. She has, for countless customers and for over six decades, altered clothing for the perfect fit, and created every piece of apparel (including wedding gowns and tuxedos). She was, no doubt, the best. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her from Bass Cleaners, Conway Cleaners and Norman's Cleaners to owning a profitable sewing business. Also successful in retail, Ms. Crett led teams selling Aloe Vera, Avon products and encyclopedias.

In 1946 Mama Crett married Steve C. Bellamy, The couple was blessed with three children, Robert Lawrence Bellamy, Steve Clyde Bellamy and Phyliss Bellamy Wedge. Her husband and son 'Clyde' predeceased her. One needs only aglimpse of her children to know that she was an extraordinary parent, primarily a single parent as her husband worked out of state during their children's formative years.

Making the best of her ninety-eight and one half years, Ms. Crett has been a member of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church for upwards of eighty years.

There, she taught Sunday School for fifty years, sang on the church choir, served as president of the Missionary Society, and for twenty years, was president of the Young Women's Auxiliary. She is lauded as having been the best ever Bible teacher for the Kingston Lake Missionary Society.

Mama Crett was for twenty-five years a charter and executive board member of the local Democratic Party. She volunteered to drive voters to polls, and worked with a number of political campaigns. She was also affiliated with the historic JR- 12 PAC and the Political Action Committee. In 1963, she received an 'Outstanding Service' award from Boy Scouts of America for her work as a den mother.

Five of Ms. Crett's siblings predeceased her: Major Booth, Hicks Booth, Jonah Booth, Ben Booth, Jr., and Eugene Booth. Her siblings Mary Booth Hickman and Frank Booth, two children: Robert (Bobby) Bellamy and Phyliss Wedge, eight grandchildren: Toni Bellamy, Robert L. Bellamy II, Robert Chante Wedge, Terry Williams, Ian Williams, Justin Jones, Phillip Jones, and Brianna Bellamy, fourteen great-grandchildren: Tyree Etheridge, Jehan Assata, Rashaun Bellamy, Chante (Cookie) Wedge, Jamere Bellamy, Hannah Williams, Natalia Simmons, Robbie Wedge, Taj Cooper, Makenzie Williams, Kennedy Wilson, TJ Williams, Zoey Williams, and LeLa Jones-Flood, one great-great-grandchild: Imaan-Kali Assata.
