DeVera Singleton Obituary

DeVera Ann Singleton was born to the late Reverend Harry Henry Singleton, II and the late Annie Mae Oliphant Singleton on December 31, 1952. She was the firstborn of six siblings, preceded in death by her parents and sisters, little baby Berlinda Gail Singleton in 1954, and Leontyne Singleton in 2006.

She was a member of the Cherry Hill Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina, until her relocation to Georgia in 2022. She is a 1971 graduate of Conway High School.  After graduation, she then matriculated to South Carolina State University (SCSU) in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Counselor Education in 1975—one of the first two recipients of that degree in the university’s history.  She also earned a Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling in 1977 from SCSU.

As a certified mental health counselor, DeVera spent over thirty years of service in the South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) Office of Mental Health. She worked in the Columbia Area Mental Health Center (formerly Midlands Center) from 1975-1979. In 1980, she transferred to the Waccamaw Center of Mental Health’s Conway Center until her retirement in 2008.

In 2022, DeVera relocated to Georgia to be near her family members. She was a resident of Regency House Senior Independent Living in Decatur for 8 months, followed by the Oaks at Conyers Senior Assisted Living in Conyers until her death. She was well-liked by the staff and her co-residents in both facilities.

After a brief illness, DeVera joined her heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.  She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her siblings: Dr. Kenneth L. Singleton (Yolanda) of Woodbury, Georgia; Terri Jo Singleton Alexander of Conyers, Georgia; and Dr. Harry “Hank” Singleton of Columbia, South Carolina. She will be dearly missed by her nieces and nephews, whom she adored: June Nicole Singleton, of Sandy Springs, Georgia; Dr. Chelsea Renee Singleton of New Orleans, Louisiana; Kenneth “KJ” Singleton of Dallas, Georgia; Chaise Michael Alexander of Stonecrest, Georgia, and Julian Jerome Alexander of Stonecrest, Georgia. Aunt Vera will be remembered as their ancestor by her great-niece and great-nephew, Paris Symone Alexander and Bryce Julian Alexander, both of Stonecrest, Georgia. She will also be remembered and missed by her 93-year-old aunt, Mary Ruth Robinson of Denver, Colorado, and a host of other sorrowing relatives, former co-workers, neighbors, and friends.
