Mrs. Evelyn Graham Britton was the 7th child born to the union of the late Rev. Luther M. and Bessie L. Watts Graham on October 10, 1934. Her surviving sibling is Luther M. Graham, Jr. (Ira). Five of her siblings and their spouses preceded her in death: Sidney Ernest Graham (Evelina), Christine G. Abraham (Robert), Bessie G.Turner (Horace), Cecil E. Graham (Eva Dell), and Catherine G. Garner (John). Mrs. Evelyn G. Britton departed this life on September 30, 2025, surrounded by her devoted and loving children.
Mrs. Evelyn G. Britton was the widow of the late Cleveland Britton, Sr., whom she was faithfully wedded to for 62 years at the time of his death. Three children were born to the couple: Evelyn M. Britton (Jonesboro, Georgia), Barbara A. Britton (Myrtle Beach, SC), and Cleveland Britton, Jr. (Charleston, SC). She has two grandchildren: Jonathan M. Britton (Kinesse) of Fayetteville, NC and Jasmine M. Britton of Reston, Virginia. Evelyn G. Britton was a good wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a faithful daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin, and friend.
She attended Myrtle Beach Colored School, the first school for African Americans in Myrtle Beach. She graduated from Whittemore High School in Conway, SC. After graduating from high school, she attended and graduated from Morris College in Sumter, SC, with honors and enjoyed playing basketball while there.
Mrs. Britton was an avid education enthusiast and demonstrated such, as an elementary school educator. She taught many students at Myrtle Beach with love and pride. Her husband and children shared the same belief in the value of education, pursuing higher education to include bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.
Mrs. Evelyn G. Britton began her teaching career with the Myrtle Beach Colored School. While teaching, she began to travel with her husband, Cleveland, throughout the United States and overseas. In addition to substitute teaching in California and Washington, Mrs. Britton also taught 5th grade in Kitzingen, Germany for the Department of Defense Education. Upon returning home to Myrtle Beach from traveling with her husband, she taught at Carver Elementary, Central Elementary, and Myrtle Beach Elementary Schools. She retired from Horry County Board of Education with 30 years of service.
Mrs. Britton remained an active member of Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church and several civic and fraternal organizations until her health began to fail. She attended Sunday School, Bible Study, taught Vacation Bible School, was a member and former President of Choir # 3. Mrs. Britton was also a member of the Order of Eastern Stars # 163 Oceanside, KABAA Court #127 Daughters, Oasis of Conway, Frank J. Gore Order of the Golden Circle #189, NAACP, a member of the Historic Myrtle Beach School Museum and Education Center Committee, and other affiliations. Mrs. Britton loved to laugh, encourage others, complete crossword puzzles, travel, sing and listen to music. She loved the Lord, family, and friends. Her love for others was no secret.
She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters:Evelyn Maxine (Jonesboro, GA) Barbara Ann (Myrtle Beach, SC) and her son, Cleveland Britton, Jr. (North Charleston, SC); two grandchildren, Jonathan M. Britton (Kinesse) of Fayetteville, NC; Jasmine M. Britton (Reston, Virginia); one brother Luther M. Graham, Jr. (Ira) Myrtle Beach, SC; Three sisters-in-law, Jesse Mae Gadson (Seffner, FL), Emma Mae Humes (Gulf Breeze, FL), Geraldine Britton (Georgetown, SC); One brother-in-law, Silas Britton (Yonkers, NY). She also leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, to cherish and honor her memory.
