Lula Mishoe Nelson was born June 7, 1926 in the Bucksport Community of Conway, South Carolina to the late Boston and Beulah (Rawls) Mishoe. Lula received her early education in Conway, South Carolina. Lula’s spiritual roots were planted and nourished at Salem AME Church, in Conway.
Lula graduated from Whittemore High School in 1946. Following her graduation, Lula relocated to Queens, New York to further her education becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Lula met and married Joseph L. Nelson of Charleston, South Carolina in 1950. She devoted 61 years of love and partnership until his death in 2011. From this union, three children were born; Brenda, Kenneth, and Dale.
Lula was employed with the New York Hospital System and served as a nurse in the maternity unit for many years. After a long rewarding career caring for others, she retired and relocated with her family back to Bucksport in 1991.
Lula was a faithful and active church goer. A highlight of her Christian walk was being blessed to travel to Israel and Egypt in her lifetime. Lula and her family later in life converted to the Seventh Day Adventist faith and joined Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church in Conway, SC. While at Bethel Lula was very active serving as superintendent of the Sabbath School, Deaconess and always participated in the annual Camp Meetings.
Lula became active in the Bucksport senior program. She would participate in outings with the seniors in the community until her health prevented her from participating.
Lula had a strong love for God, her family and pride for her community. Family was very important to her, and it was displayed with the love and care she provided to her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandson, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins and church family. Lula had several nieces and nephews including Norman Jr, Kevin, Adrian, Michael and Michelle who she nurtured as her own.
Lula is proceeded in death by her parents, Boston and Beulah Mishoe; Her husband, Joseph; 2 daughters, Brenda and Dale, 1 son, Kenneth, 4 grandchildren, Albert, Akil, William and Lamont, 7 sisters, and 3 brothers.
Lula is survived by 1 great grandson Tyler Nelson of Ft. Mill, SC; 2 sisters: Helen (Dock) Hunt, of Conway, SC; Jessie (Lonzell) Graham of Mauldin, SC; 1 son-in-law Walter Howard of Savannah, GA; a bonus son Sidney Nelson of Charleston, SC, 1 brother in-Law; Author Jones of Lanham, MD, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
