Peggy Elizabeth (Alston) Powell

On June 23, 2022, God saw fit to come into our midst and remove a limb of our family tree. Peggy Elizabeth Powell the daughter of the late William Alston and Margaret Alston was born in Bucksport, South Carolina on February 22, 1942.  Peggy attended Richardson Training School in Bucksport and Whittemore High School in Conway, South Carolina.

At an early age, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of Salem AME in the Bucksport Community where she was a faithful member until she relocated to New Jersey after graduating High school. Because of her religious upbringing, Peggy, after moving to New Jersey immediately became a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she remained for several years. Peggy was a founding member of New Hope Baptist Church of East Orange, NJ where she served as an Usher and Deaconess. After moving back to South Carolina, Peggy, and her husband Hilrie joined Cherry Hill Baptist Church of Conway South Carolina where they attended regularly until their health no longer allowed them to.

Peggy was a kind, loving and humble person. She had a heart of gold, and she had a passion for others. Because of this passion she became a foster parent that fostered numerous children throughout the years.

Peggy’s beautiful personality, infectious laugh and no-nonsense attitude brightened a room whenever she entered.

Peggy enjoyed cooking, doing hair, spoiling her grandchildren, being involved in church activities. She always enjoyed a game of chance or a relaxing much need trip to the casino and tomorrow back to life as she knew it “TAKING CARE OF OTHERS”

After graduating high school, Peggy moved to Newark, New Jersey where she pursued a career as a beautician. She remained in this field for several years. Later in life she became an employee at the Newark International Airport - Hot Shop later renamed Marriot in- Flight where she remained for over 20 years. After separating from Marriott-in-Flight she was employed by the Irvington School System where she remained until retirement.

In 2002 Peggy returned to her root in Bucksport and started a new career with Horry County Disability and Rehabilitation Services.

On September 30, 1972 Peggy was joined in Holy Matrimony to Hilrie Powell, and enjoyed 48 years of marital bliss.

Peggy was preceded in death by her Parents William A & Margaret B. Alston, Her husband Hilrie Powell and brother Samuel L. Alston. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Anthony Powell (Joanne) of Conway South Carolina; two daughters; Shiretha Mattocks (Alan) of Elmsford, New York, and Akira Parmley (Isaac) of Conway, South Carolina. Six Grand Children: Cam’ron & Makiela Conner; Kamal, Kiahni and Khalif Mattocks all of Elmsford New York and Aaliyah Parmley of Conway South Carolina. One foster child Marcus Luke of the home. Six Sisters: Margaret Alston of Conway, SC, Lorraine Burrough of Philadelphia, Sarah Alston Dunbar (Grady); Lucinda Whitfield (Judson) of Portsmouth, VA; Betty Alston of Bucksport, SC and Priscilla Dunikins of Portsmouth, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Peggy had a special bound with each of her Nieces and nephews.
