Roy was born on March 26, 1953, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to the late Mary Lily Bessent-Chestnut and Julius Chestnut. He was raised in the Racepath community, where he attended Carver School. From a young age, Roy worked to help support his parents and family, taking on jobs such as caddying at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club and working at John the Greek Pizza.
Roy later moved to New York for a few years with his older sister, where he met the love of his life, Patricia Deaver. The two married in 1974 and shared a beautiful life together, raising a loving and close-knit family.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Louise Bellamy, Rosa Lee Chestnut, Harold Chestnut, Clarice Gore, Clotis Chestnut, Gertrude Young, and Ulysses Chestnut, as well as his parents, Julius and Mary Lily B. Chestnut.
Roy was a retired landscaper who ran his own business for over 20 years. He was a passionate and dedicated worker who taught his daughters and nephews the value of hard work by taking them to work with him—often rewarding them with pay, a chili hotdog, and a drink from the Food Chief.
He was a devoted member of the Household of Faith Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon. Roy’s character and faith remain instilled in his family. He leaves a strong legacy of love, support, and wisdom, and will be remembered for the light he brought into every room and every heart he touched. As his family said, “If you was his friend, you had a devout friend indeed.”
Roy had many passions, including fishing, golf, and horses. He was a pool shark in his prime and was known for his love of Westerns and classic TV. He never shied away from sharing the Word of God and loved witnessing to others about Jesus.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Patricia Deaver Chestnut, and their children: Timika Chestnut, Lakebia Chestnut, Martine (Tori) Chestnut Watts, Tequila (Craig) Chestnut Burris, Angela Spivey, all of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Andrea Robinson of Conway, SC.
He also leaves to cherish his memory his grandchildren: Iyana, Taliah, Trevon, Amira, Ziyear, Prince, Royal, Leland, Chance, Royce, Tatiana, Tyshiek, Shakira; great-grandchildren: Kylani and A’lani.
Roy is also survived by his siblings: Rodell (William) Galloway of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Marilyn Hines of Sumter, SC; brothers-in-law: Frank (Diane) Deaver of Fayetteville, NC, Steven (Theresa) Deaver of Piscataway, NJ, Eddie (Janice) Deaver of Myrtle Beach, SC; and one sister-in-law, Annie Deaver Brown of Warsaw, NC.
Special loved ones include sons he considered his own, Tevin Brown and Demetric Stevenson; nieces and nephews he raised in his home, Ivy, Sophia, Lee Dale, and Ashley; a special niece, Kim Thompson; and special nephews, Damon Bellamy and Trello Galloway; along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
