Sarah Edna Hemingway Conner was born on April 2, 1935, in Horry County. She departed this life on September 12, 2025, at Conway Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late George Hemingway, Jr. and Rudell Mitchell Hemingway. Sarah graduated from Whittemore High School in 1952. Sarah always reached to educate and improve herself. She earned a Nursing Assistant Certificate from Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Sarah purchased a piano and took lessons from Ms. Brown. As the world moved into the computer age, Sarah bought a computer and attended computer classes at HGTC. She was united in marriage to Rolland (MC) Conner for 71 years. To this union two children were born.
Sarah is preceded in death by five of her siblings: Carrie Grissett, Robert Hemingway, Maggie Owens, George Hemingway, Jr. and Rudell Moultrie.
Sarah was a hard worker. She worked in housekeeping, as a nursing aide and worked at AVX from until she retired. After retirement she enjoyed working as a substitute teacher. She thoroughly enjoyed working with the children.
Sarah accepted Christ in her life at an early age. She joined Brown Chapel AME Church and remained a devoted faithful member throughout her life. Sarah loved working in the church and immersed herself fully in the church. Sarah was a member of the Senior Choir, Stewardess Board, Steward Board and Finance Committee. She served as the chairperson for the Pastor Aide Committee for many years. She loved working with the children of the church putting together programs and practicing with the Children’s Choir. Sarah was instrumental in implementing several projects while she served on the Building Fund Committee. She loved flowers and planted flowers at the church. Sarah also was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She would always provide a delicious pound cake for Missionary Day on fifth Sundays. Her presence will be greatly missed.
Those left with precious memories are her husband Rolland Conner and son Rolland Earl Conner of Conway, SC. Her daughter Margaret (Larry) Campbell of Raleigh, NC. Sarah will be greatly missed by her granddaughters Ariel Campbell of Norfolk, VA and Faren A. Campbell of Round Rock, TX. Her memories will also be cherished by her sisters Josephine Isom of Atlantic Beach, SC, Frances Pyatt and Patricia Hemingway of Rochester, NY and Mary Hannah of Columbia, SC. She will always be remembered by her sister-in-law Sylvia Conner of Cape May Courthouse, NJ and her brother-in-law James Moultrie of Georgetown, SC. Sarah had a special bond with Karen Sherman, a close family friend, who often helped with her care. There are a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who will feel Sarah’s absence.
