Wendell Edwin Barnes, age 82, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023 in Schertz, Texas. He was born on September 5, 1940 in Monticello, Kentucky to Lovie Lee Barnes and Edwin Jones. He attended Travis High from 1st-8th grades and graduated from Monticello High School. After graduating he joined the United States Air Force and he served for 26 years as a Jet Engine Mechanic. His first assignment was to the 861st Radar Squadron in, Aiken, South Carolina where he met and married his wife Lillie Key Barnes.

After his second assignment to Myrtle Bch AFB, SC, he retired and was employed by the Horry County School District in Conway, SC where he resided. During his time on active duty and after retiring he enjoyed using his talent as a chef at several restaurants in the Myrtle Bch area, the Non-Commissioners Club on Myrtle Bch AFB, and at his church, Mason Temple COGIC in Conway, SC, under the leadership of Superindentent/Pastor James Lee. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling, fishing, crafting with wood, and playing cards with other seniors in his community at the Genesis Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lovie Lee Paris and his step-father, Robert Paris; five siblings, Donna Jean Sloan, Veronica Slaughter, Kirby Kay Paris, Kathleen Sloan, and Sonny Paris. Wendell is survived by his wife, Lillie Key Barnes of 62 years of Schertz, Texas; his children, Linda Diane Jones (Danny) of Garden Ridge, Texas; Michael D. Key (Nancy) of Johnston, SC; Mattie Rowland of West Columbia, SC; Wendell Maurice Barnes (Ayeesha) of Cibolo, Texas; his grandchildren; Dana M. Jones, Deborah L. Hodges, Alexander Rowland, Devinn Rowland, Lawyer Barnes, and Roman Barnes; his great-grandchildren; Kamarie Crawford, Kyra Crawford, Christian Hodges and Chelsea Hodges, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
